One of the main draws to Savannah is our proclivity towards the macabre. On any given night of the week, there are dozens of ghost tours marching our squares, multiple museums touting the works of various ghouls of both supernatural and human origin, and a plaque on every historically significant building stating the various plagues/fires/freak accidents that occurred within their walls.

What is the difference between a theatre venue and a gay bar? If you are looking for a punchline, guess again, that is a genuine question. Culturally, these two spaces provide essentially the same services to their community: they are local hotspots for the arts, they are safe spaces for all different demographics of people, they provide joy and positivity within their communities... Plus, where else can you find three pounds of glitter around every corner?

The New Oak Theatre Set to Open New Theatre Venue! Among Savannah’s daily hustle and bustle, there hides in plain sight a poorly-kept secret: Live entertainment is everywhere. From the music of various bands floating out of restaurants in City Market, to the near-weekly burlesque takeovers of downtown bars, to the buskers up and down River Street, the arts are alive and better than ever within our city. However, despite the obvious abundance of talent, all of these examples and more have a single daunting thing in common: They do not have a specific venue.

Everyone with a love for the stage remembers their first performance. Whether it happened at five years old or forty five, the rush is the same: Taking your first deep breath as you walk onstage, blinded by the lights, adrenaline pumping as you try to remember anything you are supposed to be doing over the applause from the audience. Be it a theatre production, dance recital, concert, stand up, what have you, you were hooked. For many within the Savannah theatre community, this inciting incident was brought to them via the Savannah Children’s Theatre.
